Think Green – Eat no Meat

I consider myself to be pretty green. I walk or ride my bike to work when I can, I reuse bags when I can and I have set the Glass Door restaurant up with corn based and recycled to go cups, containers and silverware. When I saw this article about the emissions coming from the production of meat I was astounded. Not that I should be, but I really didn’t give it much thought. Transportation yes…raising of the animal no.

The UN panel on global warming is suggesting that meat production pumps more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere that transportation does. When you think about it, it is kinda scary. Just to be up front, I will not be quitting meat anytime soon, but there are a couple of things I will be looking at a bit more closely.

Finding product close to my current home. Don’t fall for the old carbon neutral scheme that some companies (a water company from the south Pacific comes to mind) or products that are not raised in a sustainable manner.

Grow what I can, buy what I cannot. We just got the planters for our rooftop garden lined up earlier in the week, so we will be growing most of our herbs and some produce up on the roof. Do what you can, every little bit helps.

Reuse, recycle…Use only what you need…

to read a bit more on these topics you can do the following.

For more on beef raising and carbon emissions,

For more on buying sustainable products, (example)

For more on the green water company? I mentioned

Best,

  • Great to hear the news about animal emissions is getting out more and more. I myself didn’t realize how much of an issue it was either. You hit the nail on the head by saying people just don’t think about it, but maybe looking at the forest over tree is just what we need to do more of to really go green.
